      The ICGT Foundation Scholarship

A scholarship provided by the Foundation of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo for individuals and families a part of our community.

The scholarship amount awarded annually $2,500.00.

The Mahmod & Ishe Sheronick Family Scholarship

As one of the founding families of the Toledo Islamic community, Mahmod and Ishe Sheronick moved to Toledo from Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1945.  Arriving in Cedar Rapids in 1897 from Jib Jineen, Syria, Mahmod went to work before going back home to marry.  During World War II, Mahmod and Ishe both worked and raised their family of four children, Fatima, Mohammed, Ali and Ahmed.  They performed their hajj together in 1955 during which time Mahmod died.

Hajji Ishe, as she was lovingly known in the Toledo community, is described as a feminist by her son, Mohammed.  She was forward-thinking and donated her house to the Islamic Center after her death to be held in trust for the founding of a home for the elderly.  This gift was the inception of today’s Foundation.

All of the Sheronicks’ children were dedicated to the Islamic Center community.  In 2007, Fatima Sheronick Heimrich, died leaving a generous gift to the Foundation.

In honor of the Sheronick family, the Foundation of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo has named a scholarship in the name of this extraordinary family.

The scholarship amount awarded annually $2,500.00.

The Yehia & Emney Shousher Family Scholarship

Yehia and Emney Shousher came to Toledo in 1953 from London, Ontario (and Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and immediately became active in Toledo’s Muslim community.  They were instrumental in the building, opening, and growing of the mosques on E. Bancroft and in Perrysburg.  Yehia is active and well-known in the greater Toledo community, as well as Muslim communities far and wide, and for his dedication to causes of justice, and building bridges between people.  He is truly a “child of the world.”

Education was a non-negotiable item in the Shousher family.  Their children, Mohammed, Lila, Mona, Hussien, and Mariam all live in the community and were raised with the belief that education opened minds and doors.

Over ten years ago, Yehia and Emney made a generous donation to the Foundation for the purpose of education.

Because of their commitment to the Islamic Center, education, and in keeping with the intent of the fund, the Foundation is proud to name this scholarship.

The scholarship amount awarded annually: (2) $1,000.00.

The Aziz & Nilgun Sezginis Family Scholarship

Originally from Turkey, Aziz (retired officer from Turkish air force) and Nilgün Sezginiş were drawn to Toledo area to be close to the family in 1987. They quickly became active members of the Islamic Center, enrolling their children in the Weekend School program.

Right after they were married in 1976, Aziz went back to school and earned his second degree in business/marketing from University of Texas in San Antonio, while he was working at Braniff Airlines and raising family. Nilgün earned her bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration and masters in public health, only returning to school after raising her children and seeing each on his way into his profession. Volkan earned his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the University of Toledo and Aral was awarded his MD from the Ohio State University and specialized and board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and joined a practice in Texas. Alkan is currently enrolled at Ohio State University’s dental school program. It is obvious that Aziz and Nilgün hold education near and dear to their hearts and have instilled that same significance in their sons.

The Sezginiş Family has generously funded an  annual scholarship in memory and honor of Nilgün’s mother, Müzeyyen Yaprağigür, who lived near them for 30 years prior to her death in 2009.
